About our images

The images on ASTRO come from the places below.

Where our images come from

  • Owners' photos. Photos an owner or manager adds to their property on ASTRO. An owner who has claimed their property can also have us bring in the photos from their own Airbnb or Vrbo listing; we keep our own copy.
  • Images from a business's own website. Some pages show a photo published on the business's own website, credited “Image: …’s website”. These are not the owner's photos, and the business can have them taken down.
  • Shared building photos. Where units share one address, their pages can show a photo of the building, labelled as shared photography for units at that address.
  • Licensed photos. Photos from Wikimedia Commons carry the author where known, the license and a link to the source. Pexels photos on a page name the photographer.
  • Artists' work. Art by AArtners artists is their own work. City Portraits shown in the J. Hamilton Studio gallery on AArtners are made by ASTRO.
  • Unsplash photos. Sample images owners can add to their Honor Pantry come from Unsplash.
  • Images ASTRO makes. Some images on ASTRO, including City Portraits, are made with AI image tools. They include illustrations, guide and blog images, some of them photo-like, and the representative area image a property page shows when it has no photo of its own. People review each one before it is published. ASTRO also makes images without AI, such as locator maps and screenshots. City Portraits are directed for ASTRO under the name J. Hamilton Studio. They are painterly images, never photographs of a place.

What we never do

  • Present an AI-made image as a photograph, or as made by hand.
  • Use a photo from an Airbnb, Vrbo or Booking.com listing, except photos from an owner's own Airbnb or Vrbo listing that the owner, having claimed the property, asks us to use.
  • Put our name on someone else's work.

Asking for an image to be removed

Where an image has a “Request removal” link under it, use that link. For any other image, including City Portraits and other images ASTRO makes, write to prudence@theASTRO.org with the address of the page it is on. An image we remove is not added back automatically.
